East End Lions coach voted AWOL sports personality of the year 2019.

Coach John Keister has been named the sports personality of the year 2019 in the all works of life (AWOL) award nights held at the prestigious Bintumani conference center in Freetown.  Coach Keister was nominated alongside the Sierra Leone swimming association and Mohamed Buya Turay. 

Receiving his award Coach John Keister said he felt happy to be crowned as the sports personality of the year by AWOL. I am excited to receive the sports personality of the year by one of the most respected awards body in our Country.

 He thanked the president of the Sierra Leone football association, Isha Johansen,  for giving him the opportunity to contribute in the development of football in the country. 

Coach Keister won the 2018/19 Sierra Leone premier league unbeaten with East End Lions and was crowed best coach in the Salone premier league awards.

He’s currently the coach of East End Lions and assistant coach of the Sierra Leone national team (Leone Stars).


The East End Lions Gaffer started his coaching career in Sierra Leone coaching the president of the Sierra Leone football association club FC. Johansen. He was able to promote the team from division-one club to premier league status. Coach Keister has also coached in the CAF confederation cup and is a confederation of Africa football (CAF) coach instructor.

Coach Keister, is the first coach in Sierra Leone to win a premier league trophy unbeaten in long run matches. The award was presented to John Keister by the president of Sierra Leone’s football association Isha Johansen. 

This is the first time in the history of all works of life (AWOL) awards a coach is being awarded as sports personality of the year.

Sierra Leone head Coach names 25 foreign-based players.

Lack of home football league in Sierra Leone, has not stopped the head coach of Leone Stars John Keister, from including 10 home-based talents in his 35 man provisional squad, ahead of the African Cup Of Nations (AFCON) fixtures with Ethiopia, Ghana and Kenya. Sierra Leone won her first AFCON match against Kenya in Freetown, which was a big boost to kick-start the tight fixtures in September and October. Leone Stars head Coach John Kiester names 23 Man Squad for the AFCON qualifier against the 'Walyas' of Ethiopia

After naming a preliminary Squad of 35 Players the Head Coach of Leone Stars John Keister has cut the squad down to Twenty three (23) players ahead of the crucial Match against the ‘Walyas’. Despite no effective league playing in the country, there were places in the squad for young FC Johansen Goalkeeper Mohamed N Kamara, and defender Abu Suma former player for FC Johansen. UK trio based Alhaji Sesay who plays for Bristol City in England, Osman Kakay of Queens Park Rangers and Amadou Bakayoko of Coventry City were also named in the squad alongside long time absentee Sheka Fofanah who plays his international football for Al Nasr in the Oman professional elite league.
